A Year in Review & Reflection Plus My 10 Favorite Photos from 2023

Before I get into my Top 10 Favorite Photos from 2023 I felt it would be good to do a little behind-the-scenes reflection on my year to provide context to the images.

As a photographer and artist, there is much more than just camera gear & skill that goes into the creation of exciting photographs. We bring our heart and soul into what we do to not only give the viewer a look into what we saw but also what we felt and wanted to express.

But you might not be aware that everything that is happening to us outside of work can and does impact what we see and feel when we are out there photographing, and all of that ultimately determines the quality of those photos, for good and for bad.

2023 was quite the year for me personally and professionally with some real exciting highs professionally and some huge unexpected lows personally that challenged me in ways I never thought possible at this stage in my life.

Throughout it all I still took photos, although to be honest even that was difficult at times as I soon discovered I needed to rediscover an inner passion for myself first and foremost before a passion could be brought back into my photography.

I needed to relearn how I see the world, but first I needed to relearn how I saw myself.

The deepest lows came in the spring following the unexpected end of an 8.5yr relationship that at the time I thought would last forever. Rather than have that ruin me, I made a deliberate move to instead learn more about myself and seek support and guidance from those who could help me.

I instantly saw the benefits of working on self improvement both mentally and physically, and I've been running eagerly down that path ever since. Literally too, as I got back into running - this time seriously - and have made some incredible friends along the way that I am grateful for.

Some close friends from my local running group.

I now find myself in the best shape of my life, with even more room for improvement!

In 2024 in fact I'll be competing in not only my first ever half-marathon but I’ll be doing two of them - on back-to-back weekends!!

Professionally 2023 was a great year!

More and more of my photo workshops are selling out, and so many of my clients have become repeat attendees which I am so grateful for.

Another 2023 highlight was hanging out with Jim Nix, Scott Kelby, and Vanelli for a couple days over a few dinners, lots of laughs, and a photo shoot while we were all presenting at a Utah photo conference.

2023 also saw my first two International workshops, and I'm expanding that number to at least 5 for 2024!

I’ve also started partnering with some other amazing photographers such as Jason Odell, Isabella Tabacchi, Jim Nix, Thomas Vikre, and of course my good friend and business partner who literally opened up the entire world to me, Kah-Wai Lin.

One of the biggest professional highlights of the year for me was spending 5 days in Idaho while being filmed for a short documentary about me on behalf of PetaPixel and OM SYSTEM.

It was such an honor to be chosen for that project, and Michael Bonocore from PetaPixel and the team from Silverline Films were all so amazing to work with.

That's a wrap! Group photo after filming ended in Idaho.

Conclusion

I'll be honest, the self improvement path I'm on has been painful at times both mentally and physically, but the more I work on both the stronger I appear to get.

During my deepest lows throughout the summer, it was difficult to photograph and sometimes just so hard see and be in the moment. There was so much on my mind, so many things changing and seeming so unstable. All of this effected my creativity in a negative way.

Come fall and especially into winter things started changing for me. Time was slowing down, life was becoming a little more clear, I began to rekindle that passion for creating photos, I started seeing & feeling again, and I think it’s shown in my latest photos.

Learning to relax and have fun again and just enjoy life while in the Faroe Islands, 2023

I hope this look into my struggles in 2023 gives you a better peak behind-the-scenes into what really helps create wonderful photographs. It isn’t always about the gear or the location or the skills. It’s about what’s inside and how you are feeling and how open and receptive you are to what is around you when you point your camera and click that shutter.

I know for me personally, the better I’m feeling internally, the more that shows in my photographs through better creativity, seeing, and living in the moment.

Here’s to a great 2024, for myself and for you as well!!

My 10 Favorite Photos from 2023

OM SYSTEM OM-1 Camera & M.Zuiko 8-25mm f4 Lens, NiSi Filters, Tripod High-Res Mode

Photographed in February in Lofoten, Norway during my Aurora Photo Workshop there. At this time of year the golden hour lasts for hours providing a wonderful golden light with the right clouds.

OM SYSTEM OM-1 Camera & M.Zuiko 100-400mm Lens, Hand-Held High-Res Mode

Photographed on a crisp December morning during my Grand Teton Winter Wildlife & Landscape Photo Workshop, I love the simple and limited colors in this photo. Fog in the background blocked the hill providing more detail for the trees.

OM SYSTEM OM-1 Camera & M.Zuiko 8mm f1.8 Fisheye Lens

The Aurora photographed from just outside the cabins we were staying at for my Winter Aurora Photo Workshop in Lofoten, Norway. Sometimes we didn't have to go very far to get great shots of the Aurora!

OM SYSTEM OM-1 Camera & Laowa 6mm f2.0 Lens, NiSi Filters

Photographed at sunrise after we were out all night photographing the Milky Way during my Grand Teton Milky Way & Night Sky Photo Workshop in June. The light this morning was spectacular due to some clouds that rolled in at sunrise.

OM SYSTEM OM-5 Camera & M.Zuiko 12-100mm f4 Lens

This was photographed in July at a lake in the Sawtooth Mountains during the filming of the PetaPixel & OM SYSTEM Documentary Film about me. I was hoping for a bright and colorful sunrise, but a heavy bank of fog changed my plans and took many black & white photos that I really enjoyed. This one in particular is a favorite due to it's simplicity.

My clients had numerous opportunities to get great shots this year of moose during my Grand Teton Winter Wildlife & Landscape Photo Workshop in December and this happens to be my favorite from the shots I got. These two moose were active for quite a while eating and playfully fighting with each other as a light snow was falling.

OM SYSTEM OM-1 Camera & M.Zuiko 12-100mm f4 Lens, NiSi Filters, Tripod High-Res Mode

Early in the morning during my Faroe Islands Photo Workshop we were photographing the sunrise and this salmon farm caught my eye. I instantly knew I wanted to photograph it in black & white and I was very happy with the results.

iPhone 15 Pro Max

The first night on my Grand Teton Winter Wildlife & Landscape Photo Workshops is spent downtown in Jackson Hole where we meet for dinner and walk around the Square looking for creative shots. This Pizza Restaurant that occupies an old movie theater is always worth a look for interesting shots.

iPhone 15 Pro Max

I used my iPhone 15 Pro Max for all my wide-angle shots this time during my Grand Teton Fall Landscape & Wildlife Photo Workshop to really put it to the test and see how it handles challenging lighting situations like here, where the sunlight poked through a hole in the clouds to only light up the treeline. This 48MP image is just spectacular and the iPhone handled most challenging shots incredibly well.

iPhone 15 Pro Max

On this particular day during my Grand Teton Winter Wildlife & Landscape Photo Workshop we were treated with incredible light & fog that made for some unique photos. I love how the iPhone handled this scene, with the Tetons appearing out of no where through the fog.

BONUS: A Short Time-Lapse

OM SYSTEM OM-1 Camera & M.Zuiko 8mm f1.8 Fisheye Lens

This time-lapse was shot during my Winter Aurora Photo Workshop in Lofoten, Norway. On this unforgettable evening we had the Aurora 180 degrees around us and it provided such a show for my clients.
